Beckettomos - The Greek Sailor

Ever since he was a young lad growing up in Greece, Beckettomos wanted to work on a sailing ship. He would spend all the time he could by the seashore watching ships of all kinds coming and going in the harbour where he lived.

Beckettomos wanted to practice his seamanship skills, so he learned to swim really well. In his teens, he would swim 20 km out into the bay. He would have to be careful to avoid the ships since they probably would not see him in the water. But he became an expert swimmer.

Beckettomos knew a good seaman would have to be able to tie a wide variety of knots, so he practiced these daily. He especially like the slip knots and would regularly place a slip knot trap on the carpet at home. He waited quietly for his father to step in it, and then he would quickly pull it. His father played the game with him, pretending not to see the rope trap waiting for him. Beckettomos would shout with glee when he roped his father's leg. This had to end when he grew older since he became more and more skilful at this. One day he came home to find his father hanging upside down suspended from the ceiling with the ropes around his legs. Beckettomos spent many hours being grounded for that one.

Beckettomos would toss and skip rocks on the water when he was by the seashore. He could skip a rock so well that it would seem to float on the water as it sailed over the waves. He was noted throughout all his village as an expert stone thrower. Little did he know that we would be able to toss many other things.

So Beckettomos thought he was ready at 18 years old when he applied to work on a fishing vessel. His parents were hesitant because the work was hard and dangerous at times, but they knew they could not stop him from going to sea.

Beckettomos ate a very full meal before he left for his first day of work. He was so excited to start his first assignment - keeping the decks clean.

Beckettomos the Sailor

My name is Beckettomos and I tie knots the tightest
I am a super sailor in my suit a tailored
There is nothing I can't do for my briny crew
I am going to sea and that is fine with me
The world to explore and this ship will open its door
My Captain knows my name and my reputation of fame
He has invited me to tea, my many talents he will see
I secured all containers loose on deck, tying fancy knots around their necks
I thought I was ready to dine but a feeling in me told me I was not fine
The Shish Kabobs would have to wait for this one of many rookies
I was leaning over the edge and tossing my
